Como cada 2 de febrero la localidad se viste de fiesta por partida doble, por un lado, la fundación del pueblo y por el otro, el día de su Santa Patrona.
Candelaria fue fundada por los jesuitas padres Pedro Romero y el hoy San Roque González de Santa Cruz, el 2 de febrero de 1627, a orillas del río Ibicuy afluente del río Uruguay en Brasil como la reducción Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria.
Poco tiempo después, debido a problemas de supervivencia, esta misión debió migrar varias veces hasta asentarse en Caazapamini cerca del río Ijuy, también afluente del río Uruguay, en la región del Tape en el territorio de Brasil, pero por ataques bandeirantes y epidemias que asolaron a la misión una vez más debieron emigrar, asentándose en distintas regiones hasta que en 1637 se instalan al margen derecho del río Paraná en la localidad de Campichuelo, Paraguay.
Desde Campichuelo se comenzó la construcción de lo que sería el asentamiento definitivo de la misión. Así en 1665 se traslada a la vereda del frente en el margen izquierdo del Paraná en el lugar que ocupa actualmente Candelaria, allí se emplazará la misión y los campos de agricultura y ganadería se mantenían en Campichuelo.
A partir de ese momento Candelaria tomó gran importancia por el lugar estratégico que ocupa dentro de los treinta pueblos de las misiones que ocupaban parte de los territorios actuales de Argentina, Brasil y Paraguay, lo que le llevó a ser la Capital de los Treinta Pueblos de las Misiones, y lugar de residencia de las autoridades.
Así comienza la rica historia de Candelaria. Por ella desfilaron grandes personalidades como Santiago de Liniers, Gervasio Artigas, Andrés Guacurarí y el mismo General Manuel Belgrano, cuando se dirigía a Asunción del Paraguay.
Estando en Candelaria se manifiesta que el General Belgrano descansando a la sombra del Sarandí “ícono de la cultura de Candelaria”, ordenó redactar el reglamento de los 30 pueblos de las misiones y que se tomó como base de nuestra Constitución Provincial.
El 8 de julio de 1810, en una manifestación democrática única en ese momento, Candelaria en un cabildo abierto dará lectura en castellano y guaraní la proclama de la Primera Junta de Gobierno del 25 de Mayo la que será aceptada por unanimidad por todos los presentes.
En 1815 nuevamente Candelaria será sede de un acontecimiento extraordinario, sus hijos nativos comandados por su héroe regional más importante “Andrés Guacurarí” triunfarán en la batalla de Candelaria expulsando definitivamente a los paraguayos en una heroica defensa de nuestra soberanía nacional.
El martes 2 se cumplirán 394 años de su fundación y 356 años desde que se asentaron definitivamente en este lugar, la rica historia de Candelaria continúa, un pueblo jesuítico que supo aggiornarse a los tiempos modernos con todo lo que ello conlleva manteniendo intacta su cultura, lo que hace que aún hoy sea reconocida como la Antigua Capital de la Provincia de Misiones y la histórica Capital de los Treinta Pueblos de las Misiones Jesuíticas.
Pero el 2 de febrero no sólo se recuerda la fundación de Candelaria sino también el día de su Santa Patrona “Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria”. Este día visitan la localidad peregrinos y devotos de diferentes partes del país y de países vecinos, todos con un solo objetivo: venerar a la imagen y dar gracias por los favores recibidos.
Este año será una fiesta diferente debido a la pandemia existente, seguramente la procesión desde las ruinas jesuíticas hasta el templo o la serenata a la virgen no se realizará presencialmente, pero la fe de miles de peregrinos seguirá intacta.
La imagen de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, que moviliza a miles de peregrinos, fue traída desde Alemania encargada por el padre Floriano Kroneiss, en 1960, y ese mismo año fue entronizada por Monseñor Jorge Kemerer.
En el año 2010 fue coronada por Monseñor Rubén Martínez en compañía del padre Sergio Domínguez y toda la comunidad presente. Cabe resaltar que la advocación a Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria es la segunda más venerada en América, solo detrás de la Virgen de Guadalupe, patrona de México.
Cada noche del primero de febrero se realiza la serenata a la Virgen de la Candelaria, donde la comunidad local y visitantes de diferentes lugares, se acercan a participar del evento, contando con la presencia de artistas, cantantes, bailarines de diversos rubros que veneran a la Virgen en su día. Es un acto cultural muy importante para la localidad y la antesala al 2 de febrero, fecha de fundación de la misma.
El martes, no será un día más, seguramente se vivirá con nostalgia los festejos de años anteriores, pero no por eso será menos importante, la fe de miles de devotos y el pueblo de Candelaria seguramente estará intacta como todos los años. Candelaria mantiene viva su cultura haciendo honor a esa magia guaraní propia de estos pueblos jesuíticos.
En esta doble festividad, la geografía local aporta sus rasgos característicos y fisonómicos para concretar el turismo religioso presente y propio de la comunidad que lo conlleva y que se desarrolla en esta fecha. Los fieles visitan y se concentran en cercanías a las ruinas enmarcadas en el predio de la Colonia Penal U-17 y cerca de las orillas del río Paraná, para realizar la tradicional procesión hacia la Iglesia emplazada en el casco antiguo urbano.
La Iglesia “Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria” se ubica sobre las avenidas San Roque González de Santa Cruz y Roque Sáenz Peña, a una altitud de 125 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Geográficamente corresponde a un hito o mojón, es decir un punto de referencia que se considera exterior al observador y, constituye un elemento físico importante de la localidad como símbolo puntual y central de Candelaria.
En el trayecto de procesión, se pueden observar y apreciar diversas casas antiguas que datan de fines del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX y una variedad de murales que se traslucen en la historia y geografía local.
La localidad de Candelaria, se localiza en la margen izquierda del río Paraná al Suroeste de la provincia y al Noroeste de Posadas, a unos 27 kilómetros de la ciudad capital y a los 27° 27´ de latitud Sur y a los 55° 44´de longitud Oeste. Sus límites son: al Norte el río Paraná y el arroyo Anselmo, al Sur y Este, el arroyo Pelado y Garupá, por el Este el arroyo San Juan y al Oeste el arroyo Garupá.
Para comprender mejor su espacio y legado histórico y cultural se muestra la siguiente fuente cartográfica acerca del primer parcelamiento rural y donde se visualiza el casco céntrico y alrededores urbanos que hasta hoy se mantienen en estructura y parcelas en cuadrícula o damero.
